When people who are suffering entrust their care with a doctor, they do so with the faith that their doctor will always have their best interests at heart. Unfortunately, there are the rare instances where this is not the case.

In an attempt to fund his lavish lifestyle, Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada is accused of misdiagnosing patients and administering toxic medications to thousands of individuals, including children, who did not need them. Below, we’ll discuss who Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada is, what he is being charged with, and what you should do if you or someone you know has been affected by his alleged medical negligence.

Who is Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada?

Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada is a South Texas based rheumatologist who primarily assisted in diagnosing and treating patients who were suffering from arthritis. Throughout his career, Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada worked at several different medical facilities in South Texas, including locations in San Antonio, Edinburg, and Brownsville.

It was the lavish lifestyle of Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada, however, that would ultimately lead to his undoing. According to a statement from the Department of Justice, Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada used the $50 million he and his co-conspirators earned from their medical fraud scheme to purchase luxury cars, private jets, designer clothes, and property both in the United States and Mexico. All of these luxuries were paid for at the expense of patients who trusted Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada with their care and were harmed in the process.

What Is He Accused Of Doing?

Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada is accused of creating thousands of false patient records while hiding the real records in a barn in the Rio Grande Valley. Zamora-Quezada then used those false records to justify misdiagnosing patients with degenerative diseases such as arthritis before “treating” them with unnecessary chemotherapy or an injection of toxic medications that they did not need. In most of the cases, these unnecessary treatments negatively affected the health of Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada’s patients and in some cases were even life-threatening.

C.J. Porter – a special agent of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General’s Dallas Region – said in a statement about Dr. Zamora Quezada that, “His patients trusted him and presumed his integrity; in return he allegedly engaged in a scheme of false diagnoses and bogus courses of treatment and doled out prescriptions for unnecessary and harmful medications, all for his personal financial gain and with no regard for patient well-being.”

Raymond Orta, one of Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada’s patients who was misdiagnosed with arthritis and given chemo-level drugs said upon learning about Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada’s false diagnosis that “Instead of helping me up as a doctor, he essentially spit on me while I was down. Like at the lowest level, this dude spit on me and kicked me while I was down.”

According to CNN, Nora Rodriguez – another of Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada’s misdiagnosed patients – described the doctor growing angry with her when she questioned why the treatments were not working, saying, ” “He kept getting upset when I was asking him why I was feeling worse and not getting better. He yelled and told me, ‘you are no longer my patient; get out of this office.’ I’m getting chills remembering this.”

Adding insult to injury is the fact that Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada’s scam could have been uncovered much sooner. In 2006, Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada was accused by the Texas Medical Board of prescribing a drug that was “inconsistent with public health and welfare” and of “billing for treatment that was improper, unreasonable, or medically or clinically unnecessary.”, as reported in 2010 by the Dallas Morning News. At the time, however, Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada was given little more than a slap on the wrist for his misconduct, as the Texas Medical Board’s findings only resulted in him being issued a $30,000 fine and having his practice monitored for two years by an outside physician.

In addition to medical fraud, Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada is also being charged with international money laundering. Zamora-Quezada allegedly invested the money he earned from the scam – an estimated $50 million – in foreign real estate in an attempt to disguise the funds from authorities. Dr. Jorge Zamora-Quezada is currently being held behind bars without bond.
